Straightforward expressions. |
Ever read or heard a conversation where the people are talking in not so straightforward expressions or phrases? Straightforward means what exactly the situation is for example:
Jamie is scared.
Yet, the person said instead says:
Jamie has cold feet.
They both mean the same thing, but the second sentence has an idiom, or a natural manner of speaking to the native speaker of the language usually in a form of a phrase.
Considering that most fanfiction is written in English, there at times when many people get confused when a phrase or an idiom comes in. Mostly this happens to non first language English speakers but at times it can be so because simply we lack the knowledge.
For example:
The picture demonstrated above is one. Truthfully I wasn't aware of this idiom before I watched a Mythbusters episode based on it. Interestingly, the idiom does have some true form to it as when it does happens, it gets messy for everyone. As for the 'cold feet' idiom, yes, when you are literally terrified your feet's temperature do drop.
